The Importance of the High Priest in the lives of the Hebrews:

  • appointed by God as the mediator between Himself and the people

  • only the High Priest could offer the highest sacrifice under the old covenant; once a year on the day of Atonement

  • all the sins of the people were brought symbolically to the Holy of Holies where blood was sprinkled on the mercy seat as a sacrifice to atone for them

  • he represented God before the people and the people before God

  • before he could offer for the people he had to make an offering for himself and his time was limited in the Holy of Holies

    • had to pass through 3 areas in the tabernacle or the temple

      • door of the outer court

      • through another door into the Holy Place

      • through the veil into the Holy of Holies

    • he did not sit down or delay; as soon as the sacrifice was made, he left and would not return for another year

What difference does having a great High Priest make?

HOLD FAST TO THE ONE WHO UNDERSTANDS (vv. 14b-15)

  • “hold fast” - arrest, seize, hold firmly

    • hold on to what we believe not set it down to worry, vent, or rage, but hold firmly to it because He understands and can get you through.

      • “sympathetic” - touched with feelings; feelings of pity and sorrow for someone else’s misfortune

      • “empathetic” - ability to understand and share the feelings of another

      • “weakness” - sickness; disease

DRAW NEAR TO THE ONE WHO HELPS (v. 16)

  • The Throne of Grace

    • “with confidence”

      • boldly with a sense of frankness

    • “so that”

      • We may receive what we so desperately need (mercy, compassion, pity)

The Gospel According to Gomer

“Come, let us return to the Lord.
For He has torn us, but He will heal us;
He has wounded us, but He will bandage us.
“He will revive us after two days;
He will raise us up on the third day,
That we may live before Him.
“So let us know, let us press on to know the Lord.
His going forth is as certain as the dawn;
And He will come to us like the rain,
Like the spring rain watering the earth.” Hosea 6:1-3
