Scripture Reference: Matthew 11:25-30
REST BEGINS WITH PRAISE (v 25)
“I praise thee, O Father . . .”
He is God and we are NOT
We can’t say “I got this”
It’s not you, it’s Him; not your strength, wisdom, provision, etc. It’s all Him!
When you’ve reached the end of yourself you’re not disappointing God, you’re at the point where you’re pleasing to Him.
A Son who is in control
Knows what it’s like to be in the flesh; hungry, weary, burdened, alone, sad, etc.
He has all authority
He has knowledge
He knows the Father perfectly and is perfectly known
He has agency/agent
The only way you can know God is to know Jesus
He has exclusivity
There is no other way to come except through Jesus
The crushing just drives us back to the face of the Father
REST ONLY TAKES A STEP
Step of Faith
All we can do is take the step
Rest is a peace and a joy in the middle of distress
We cannot satisfy our own soul or give ourselves rest; Jesus is the only one who can.
Step of Repentance (v 28)
He will complete the work He began in you
He is under no obligation to speak to you again
Rest only takes a step of faith
“Come to me ALL” (who are weary)
Recognize the burden and come to Jesus
depending on yourself is to walk in sin
You can be doing good things and be weary
Do your daily toils leave you exhausted?
Are you tired of trying to figure it all out?
“Heavy laden” —> burdened; weighed down, a burden laid on your back
“weary” —> exhaustion from internal efforts
A Step Towards Grace
Isaiah 55:1, 3
You bringing nothing and being overwhelmed with His something/everything
REST INCREASES WITH SURRENDER (v 29, 30)
“take my yoke” —> for Him to carry the load/burder, Him to provide direction, Him to Guide, to provide rest, to learn from Him
I Peter 2:21
Why would we take His yoke?
Because He is gentle and humble in heart
COME TO JESUS
Oh soul are you weary and troubled,
no light in the darkness you see?
There’s life for a look at the Savior,
And life more abundant and free.
Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in HIs wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.
