Come to Jesus - A Call to Rest


Scripture Reference: Matthew 11:25-30


  • “I praise thee, O Father . . .”

    • He is God and we are NOT

    • We can’t say “I got this”

      • It’s not you, it’s Him; not your strength, wisdom, provision, etc. It’s all Him!

      • When you’ve reached the end of yourself you’re not disappointing God, you’re at the point where you’re pleasing to Him.

  • A Son who is in control

    • Knows what it’s like to be in the flesh; hungry, weary, burdened, alone, sad, etc.

    • He has all authority

    • He has knowledge

      • He knows the Father perfectly and is perfectly known

    • He has agency/agent

      • The only way you can know God is to know Jesus

      • reveals God

    • He has exclusivity

      • There is no other way to come except through Jesus

      • The crushing just drives us back to the face of the Father


  • Step of Faith

    • All we can do is take the step

    • Rest is a peace and a joy in the middle of distress

    • We cannot satisfy our own soul or give ourselves rest; Jesus is the only one who can.

  • Step of Repentance (v 28)

    • “Come”

      • He will complete the work He began in you

      • He is under no obligation to speak to you again

      • Rest only takes a step of faith

    • “Come to me ALL” (who are weary)

      • Matthew 8:1

      • Recognize the burden and come to Jesus

        • depending on yourself is to walk in sin

      • You can be doing good things and be weary

      • Do your daily toils leave you exhausted?

        • Are you tired of trying to figure it all out?

    • “Heavy laden” —> burdened; weighed down, a burden laid on your back

    • “weary” —> exhaustion from internal efforts

  • A Step Towards Grace

    • Isaiah 55:1, 3

    • You bringing nothing and being overwhelmed with His something/everything


  • “take my yoke” —> for Him to carry the load/burder, Him to provide direction, Him to Guide, to provide rest, to learn from Him

    • John 15:13

    • Ephesians 4:20

    • Philippians 2:5

    • I Peter 2:21

    • Why would we take His yoke?

Because He is gentle and humble in heart


Oh soul are you weary and troubled,

no light in the darkness you see?

There’s life for a look at the Savior,

And life more abundant and free.

Turn your eyes upon Jesus,

Look full in HIs wonderful face,

And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,

In the light of His glory and grace.
