  • God gives grace to the humble but resists the proud

    • The humble heart recognizes the need

    • The humble heart receives

  • We will not embrace or receive what we do not think we need

    • v 4-11 - like a “parent training a child”

    • “train up as he should go” is at the heart of discipline

  • Discipline in the life of the believer is never judgment

    • Discipline is for a season

    • Discipline is for a purpose

      • Correction —> not rejection but correction

      • Corrective Punishment —> intentional pain as a result of our choice to sin

      • Prevention; Protection —> leading us in the best way

      • Teaching; Education

      • Maturity —> to mature us

EMBRACING HIS DISCIPLNE REQUIRES PERSPECTIVE

Our perspective begins in all things looking to Jesus ; setting your eyes on Jesus; following His example

  • What else is there worth looking at?

  • What else is there worth focusing on?

  • The benefit of the discipline is eternal. The discipline is temporal and for a time, but its rewards are eternal.

    • It matters; don’t take the Lord’s discipline lightly.

    • God will do whatever it takes to conform you to the image of His Son.

DISCIPLINE BRINGS PRODUCE (9-11)

  • It identifies you; the mark of a familial love; a father’s love

  • Discipline produces:

    • life —> those walking in complete obedience with God live the richest life

    • good —> the good He desires for us; His holiness

    • righteousness
