The Perfect High Priest, Source of Salvation

Summary

SERIES: PREEMINENCE

Scripture Reference: Hebrews 5:1-10

Insight

Why does this matter to me?

There is a problem; sin separates us from God.

We need someone to remove the guilt of our sin and conquer what holds us captive.

We need an advocate; a mediator.

We need a Savior.

We need a High Priest.

HEARING THE PLEA (v. 1-11)

  • Entering Rest is Available

  • Failure to Enter is Possible

    • The Lord will only let you walk in disobedience for a season. He will either get you right, or take you out.

  • Responding in Faith is Essential

THE PICTURE OF A HIGH PRIEST

  • Had to be a man appointed by God

  • Had to be sympathetic toward mankind

    • He can deal gently with the ignorant and misguided, since he himself also is beset with weakness.

      • “deal gently” - have compassion; curb his emotions

  • Making sacrifices to God

THE PERFECTION OF THE HIGH PRIEST

  • Appointed by God

    • Jesus was chosen, sent, and honored by God the Father

    • Jesus did not take honor on Himself

    • Jesus, Appointed by God, a priest forever

  • Sympathetic Toward Mankind

    • Perfect Knowledge

    • Perfect Experience

  • Sacrifices to God

    • Jesus having been proven and made perfect, offered himself up; perfectly qualified as the Perfect High Priest…appointed by God, sympathetic toward man, offered himself up, not for his need; eternally perfect in righteousness, holiness, wisdom; once for all eternity.

    • In His perfection as the Great High Priest…he became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation.

CONCLUSION/APPLICATION
