Summary

SERIES: PREEMINENCE

Scripture Reference: Hebrews 6:13-20

Insight

  • Hebrews 6:9-20

INTRODUCTION

  • Contrast of the warning to encouragement

  • What was the warning of the preceding verses?

    • Press on to maturity

    • It’s not OK to remain immature

    • Unable to understand, to rightly handle, to apply the word of God

    • It’s not OK to remain immature

    • Lacking depth, discipling, and desire to grow

  • How strong is the warning?

    • Believers will suffer loss and may be disqualified; saved as through fire; but tragic when considering what might have been had they pressed on to maturity

    • Unbelievers presume much; to give intellectual assent, but not cross over in surrendered faith; each breath presumes the next; He has already show them such mercy and grace

Then the tone changes from warning to encouragement

  • Our encouragement

    • “realize the full assurance of hope until the end, so that you will not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.”

    • “so that we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us.”

Take hold of hope . . .

    • Abraham had just seen that God is Jehovah Jireh . . . “The Lord will provide”

      • He is the All Sufficient One - El Shaddai - Gen. 17:1

      • He is Faithful - but through all of this - seeing the character of God - He is faithful

BECAUSE OF WHAT HE HAS SAID (v. 16-18)

  • I will bless you and make you a blessing (Gen. 12:1-3)

    • He promised - Gen. 12:1-3

    • He said it again - Gen. 17:4-6

    • And He said it again - Gen. 18:17-18

Then Gen. 22

  • I swear by Myself, I will bless you - He makes an oath

    • And multiply you

    • And bless the nations through you

      • Indicates that He is bound to His word by His own character. his oath provides the guarantee that removes doubt and underscores the validity of the promise.

  • It is impossible for God to lie - His promise sure and steadfast

    • Num. 23:19

    • Titus 1:1-3

    • Heb. 6:17

BECAUSE OF WHAT HE HAS DONE (v. 19-20)

  • He has gone before us - a forerunner for us

  • He has gone before us within the veil into the very presence of God

  • He has become our high priest forever

CONCLUSION/APPLICATION

  • Life is trying and it tests and tries our faith

    • Hebrews 6:11-12

    • v. 15

      • Abraham having patiently waited, he obtained the promise

  • This message is for those “who have taken refuge” - the idea is we who have fled to Him for refuge

  • Has your faith been tried? What is your Hope, your assurance?

    • It is in Who He is - What He has said - What He has already done
