“so that” —> He might taste death for everyone

PERFECTED HUMILITY (v10)

  • “fitting” —> only right; consistent with God’s character

    • He loved us

      • Consistent with:

        • God’s Wisdom

          • No mind could have or would have thought of the way to save us

        • God’s Holiness

          • Hatred of sin; He cannot sin

        • God’s Power

          • He is the only one who could conquer death and the grave

        • God’s Love

          • His love for the world, fallen and broken mankind/sinners

        • God’s Grace

          • His substitutionary provision

          • God’s Riches at Christ’s Expense

  • “perfect” —> finish; complete

  • “author” —>leader; pioneer; founder

    • this perfecting author of our salvation came through suffering

    • He lived the perfect pattern of obedience, leading us in salvation

UNASHAMED IDENTITY (v11-13)

  • Sanctifier

    • He is the Holy One that makes us holy

      • Positionally

      • Practically

  • Brother

    • Proclaiming the Father to us

    • Praising the Father in the midst of us

    • Trusting the Father

    • Jesus, our brother in common righteousness and faith

RESTORED LIBERTY (v14-16)

  • Shares in flesh and blood

    • “share” —> koininia; fellowship, communion

    • “partook” —> taking hold of something that is not naturally one’s own kind

      • By nature we are very different from the Son of God, but by willing purpose He takes hold of our nature so that He might die in our place that we might take hold of the diving nature

  • Conquers the power of death

    • He renders Satan powerless

  • Delivers from the fear of death

INHABITED EMPATHY (v17-18)

  • He became like us in all things THAT He might be for us in our relating to God

  • He became like us SO THAT hHe might be for us

APPLICATION

GOD’S EMPATHY + CHRIST’S AGENCY = OUR LIBERTY
