Insight

WE MUST ANCHOR IN OR DRIFT AWAY

  • (2:1) “Therefore”; “for this reason”; “because of this”

There is great tragedy in having come so close and missed it; having had a victory in hand and lost it, especially when it comes through neglect.

  • Time wasted

  • Resources squandered

  • Health abused and lost . . . through neglect

2 Tragedies:

  • Those in Christ who neglect what they have to the eternal harm of all those around

  • Those who have heard, intellectually agree with or believe, but fail to embrace through faith

The 5 Warning Passages of Hebrews:

  • 2:1-4

  • 3:7-4:13

  • 5:11-6:12

  • 10:19-39

  • 12:14-29

We must pay closer attention to what we have heard so that we do not drift away from it.

2 Words/Phrases:

  • “pay much closer attention” —> most likely a technical nautical term meaning “to hold a ship toward port”

    • Indicates the fastening of the anchor to the seabed to keep the ship from drifting; idea of anchoring the ship in the harbor

  • “drift away” —> used of a ship allowed to drift past the harbor by neglect or not paying attention to it

        • the One who sits at the right hand of the Majesty on high

        • worshiped and served by the angels

        • anointed above all others

        • unchangeable, everlasting God

  • Because of What He has said

    • There is salvation in His Son

    • God spoke and now had spoken in His Son

    • In Jesus, God speaks with:

      • Clarity

      • Finality

      • Authority

      • (v 4) Signs and wonders and various miracles

  • Because of What He has done

    • Purified from sin

  • Because of What it means

    • God is just; as such there is just recompense; salvation to some, penalty to others

WE MUST NOT DRIFT AWAY

  • Drift

  • Desertion —> be all in for a while then desert

  • Destruction
